By The Throat is the third full - length album from the Minnesota duo Eyedea (r.i.p.) and DJ Abilities. Departing from their previous Golden - era influenced works, this album features a rougher, guitar and distorted - drums driven sound. Eyedea takes a more reflective and emotionally charged approach to lyric - writing, and occasionally sings in his raps, a bold move as emo style is now common in hip - hop. Tracks like 'Junk' with its fat bassline and hard - hitting drums, and 'Burn Fetish' with a memorable chorus ('empathy is the poor man's cocaine') are highlights. 'By the Throat' and 'Smile' also stand out. Abilities' production and cuts are top - notch. This is a 10 - year anniversary edition with watercolor swirl vinyl, a wrapped art parker jacket with film lamination, a printed sleeve and insert with full album lyrics.
