Here's the start of it all! Steven Ellison, known as Flying Lotus, released his debut album, now back in print on splatter grey vinyl. Before his big break on Warp or running Brainfeeder, we knew Flylo was headed for greatness. In 2006, our review noted that in LA, he was getting a lot of word - of - mouth hype. His sound fits into the LA underground future soul scene, like SIC, Sa - Ra, Dilla, etc., but takes it to a cosmic level with tracks like '1983'. There are 10 tracks that can make you feel like you're floating in space. 'Pet Monster Shotglass' is a standout, with its fun onomatopoeia. Brazilian influence shows up, whether in track names like 'Orbit Brazil' or in the style of 'Unexpected Delight' with Laura Darlington's lovely vocals. This album can be whatever you want: get lost in its complexity or play it in the background while you work. It includes a Daedelus remix of '1983', and Flylo descends from the Coltrane line.
