Perception Productions, a New York - based label from the late 60s to 1974, offers an eclectic mix of jazz, funk, soul, and proto - disco. Its roster showcases both established greats like Shirley Horn, James Moody, and Dizzy Gillespie, and up - and - coming acts. Dizzy Gillespie's debut on the label, 'The Real Thing', is a rare groove masterpiece with the sampled 'Matrix'. Perception also explored soul and funk, signing Bill Curtis from the Fatback Band and Patrick Adams. Adams' work with Black Ivory and Leroy Burgess, especially tracks from 'Don't Turn Around', is highly influential. The Fatback Band transitioned from street funk to a disco - informed sound after 'Going To See My Baby' was picked by DJ Frankie Crocker. Perception and Today also had many one - off acts, like the Eight Minutes and Bobby Rydell. DJ Spinna has expertly curated this collection for BBE. A must - have for music lovers.
