Mwandishi came out in 1970, right in Herbie Hancock's prime. It sits between his late - 60s Blue Notes like The Prisoner and Speak Like A Child, and his early - 70s Headhunters records. This album combines the best of contemplative jazz and emerging funk. It features 3 long tracks, each around 15 minutes. 'You'll Know When You Get There' has greatly influenced abstract beats and downtempo music. With its meandering basslines and horns, it's a staple for sampling. 'Ostinato' shows early signs of the Headhunters' style and is an early example of'space funk'. 'Wandering Spirit Song' spans the side and offers 20 minutes of amazing jazz exploration similar to Bitches Brew. It's highly recommended.
