Groundislava has evolved significantly since his LA beat scene days. Jasper Patterson's music on Frozen Throne is a far cry from his early chiptune hip - hop. His previous album Feel Me gave hints of this new direction, but Frozen Throne exceeds expectations. Perhaps his work with Rare Times, who appear on over half of the album's tracks, led to this change. This album is full of smooth and catchy vocal pop moments that might surprise you at first. Give the songs a chance, and let Groundislava redefine himself. The sound is smooth, soulful, sometimes sweet, and has a touch of house music. He follows in the footsteps of Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Perfume Genius. It's underground - informed pop, updated for modern ears, effortless and enjoyable.
